An international summer school „Georgia and Western Integration – Progress and Obstacles” was launched at the Ilia Chavchavadze State University on August 24. According to the head of the program David Aprasidze, themes of the summer school produced more interest than initially expected. As a result participants had to be chosen on a competitive basis. 21 German students enrolled in the program will enjoy an opportunity to attend lectures of Georgian and German professors.

Duration of the summer school is two weeks (21.08-06.09). It will include lectures, workshops and discussions in Tbilisi and later at the Abastumani Observatory. Funding and co-coordination for the summer school is provided by German Academic Exchange Service (DAAD). During the course different topics will be discussed: „civil society” as an active person in conflict resolution (on an example of Georgian-Abkhaz relations); rapprochement of Europe to the South Caucasus and American interests in the region; different perceptions of three Caucasian states concerning western integration and „becoming European”; concepts of „territorial autonomy” and „common state” – realistic alternatives to separatism in the South Caucasus. Every lecture will be followed by a discussion and foreign students will present papers on specific topics.

During the summer school German students and professors will visit Uplistsikhe, Vardzia, Mtskheta, Borjomi-Kharagauli National Park and other places of interest.
