Tbilisi’s swimming complex “Olympic” hosted a kick-off meeting of a selection round for the European Championship 2012. The tournament started with a game between the Georgian National and British teams, who have met twice during the last two years. Last year it was during the qualification meeting of the European B Championship that the Georgian team scored 10:9 and defeated the rivals. In May 2010 we won again 10:7 at the Tbilisi International Tournament. The third meeting ended with a victory of the Georgian side again (9:3). This happened despite the fact that the Britons are undergoing a very intensive training for the Olympic Games of 2012. The Georgian team started to restore its traditions only just two years ago. Water-polo club “Ligamus” from the Ilia State University contributes much of the success of the national team. Famous Georgian sportsman Revaz Chomakhidze from the Ilia State University scored three goals, two more were added by “Ligamus” members Zurab Rurua and Mikheil Baghaturia.

The next qualification game will include participation of Georgian and Greek sportsmen, and will take place on March 30, 2011 in Tbilisi. There will be only two teams from the group to become eligible for a transfer to the next round. Our team made an important step forward for gaining a ticket to it.
