International Tournament for Gvakharia Cup

On March 4-6, Tbilisi’s swimming complex “Olympic” hosted the first international water–polo tournament dedicated to “Nodar Gvakharia Cup“. Nodar Gvakharia was a Georgian water polo player, winner of Olympic Games and owner of a bronze medal through European Championship in 1956; also, he was a coach of the union team and Tbilisi’s “Dinamo”.

Georgian teams I and II included the players of Sport club “Ligamus”, “Iveria” and Tbilisi”, participated in the tournament along with Ukraine and Belarus. From the sport club “Ligamus”, Zurab Chikvaidze, Revaz Imnaishvili, George Gabadadze and Mamuka Tukhareli played in the team I and Lasha Kochiashvili, Vakhtang Kutsia, Sandro Totladze, Erekle Tsamalashvili and Tornike Shengelia in the team II as well. 

First Round: Georgia (1) – Ukraine 18:2, Georgia (2) – Belarus 9:10

Second Round: Georgia (1) –Belarus 16:10, Georgia (2) – Ukraine 8:11.

Third Round: Ukraine-Belarus 12:6, Georgia (1) – Georgia (2) 22:4

After three-day tournament, the team I won “Nodar Gvakharia Cup” with 9-point difference, Ukraine took the 2nd place with 6-point difference; Belarus took the 3rd place as well. Georgian team II took the last position.   Zurab Chikvadze, player of water polo club “Ligamus”, became the best defender.
