Study of Black Sea Dolphin started by Iliauni Life Science Faculty Masters’ students in Grigoleti Balck Sea Research center. Expedition lead by prof. Zurab Gurielidze and assisted by prof.Bela Japoshvili and prof. Natia Kopaliani, is first ever special research of this species in Georgia.
Iliauni boat Catherine hosted researches in Black Sea waters. Students managed to find and study all three species of dolphins (common dolphin, bottlenose dolphin and harbor porpoise) known in this region. GPS satellite navigator helped to identify their meeting points that are important to estimate dolphins’ spatial distribution and its seasonal changes. Also dolphins’ food base has been researched during the expedition. To identify possible risks for dolphins, researchers located buildings and structures which could threaten the animals. To estimate water contamination level water samples has been taken in dolphins’ spreading areas and examined in the lab.

The expedition is the starting stage of dolphins’ ecology study in Black Sea waters. The Life Science faculty and its masters’ students will continue work on this issue.
