Today was the last day of an international conference “Hidden Nations, Enduring Crimes: The Circassians and Peoples of the North Caucasus Between Past and Future”. The conference was jointly organized by the Jamestown Foundation and Ilia State University and brought together participants of different backgrounds: activists from the North Caucasian diasporas and some established scientists, among them: Norman Stone, Moshe Gammer, Maria Shaninger and others. The conference gave representatives of the North Caucasian peoples a unique chance to initiate discussion on important historic events and urgent problems.
As a result two resolutions were prepared by the Circessian and Chechen delegations: they address the Georgian Parliament and leadership of different states with plea to recognize actions carried out by the Russian State during the last two centuries against peoples of the North Caucasus as the genocide.
The resolutions also contain request to recognize Sochi as a place and symbol of Circassian genocide and ethnic cleansing in order to cancel it as the host location for Winter Olympics 2014.
