The EU has launched the European Excellence Initiative (EEI) under HORIZON-WIDERA-2025-01-ACCESS-01, aimed at strengthening research and innovation (R&I) excellence in higher-education institutions—especially in lower-performing “widening” regions.

• Budget: approx. €80 million
• Funding per project: between €2-5 million
• Deadline: 20 November 2025

Institutions are expected to commit to reforms, build capacity, foster excellence through partnerships, and modernise research practices.
